About Chongqing
Chongqing is a great city known for its rich history and culture. With a population of 30.02 million and an area of 82,000 square km, it is now the economic center of the upper reaches of the Yangtze River and the biggest metropolis in middle and west China.
In its long history of over three thousands years, Chongqing has been made capital for three times. It was the capital city of the ancient Ba State in the 11th century BC, the capital of Da Xia State at the time of late Yuan dynasty. Later, it once again served as the wartime capital of China during World War Ⅱ and the resistance war against Japanese invaders.
After the city was liberated on November 30, 1949, it became the seat of the Southwest Military and Administrative Commission. It was chosen by the State Council as China’s first pilot city to carry out economic restructuring program. Chongqing was elevated to a municipality directly under the Central government on March 14, 1997.
